A little goat brings a wide smile on the face of Mrs. Sushila Bariha as well as ensures her livelihood!

Mrs. Sushila Bariha, age 55 years is a resident of Saraspada village under Dangarpada panchyat in Murobahal Block. Her family comprises of his wife and a 13 year old daughter. She was a tribal farmer who once owned a 3 acre land. Due to extreme poverty and desperate times, her father was forced to sell the land in order to provide for the family. Due to the loss of land, Sushila was forced to become a migrant labour in nearby states. Due to worsening financial conditions, her daughter had to drop out from school. Once after returning from labour work, she tried staying back in the village depending on MNERGA work. But could not make the ends meet and was again forced to migrate to Andhra Pradesh for work.

In August, 2022 NYDHEE began with the implementation of Social Capital Credit for the poorest of poor in Muribahal block. Mrs. Sushila was selected as one of the project participants under this intervention. When she joined the program and started participating in various activities, she understood the importance of both economic earning as well as building up of social capital. With the pursuance from NYDHEE staff, she got his daughter enrolled back in school and today she is happily continuing with her studies. As part of the redemption process, Sushila was given Rs. 2200 for purchasing a goat. She added equal amount from his side and purchased 2 goats. She was also provided Integrated Animal Management training by NYDHEE staff which provided him with the technical knowledge on goat rearing. With timely vaccination, proper feed and care her Goatery business flourished to 6 goats at present. She is now leading a stable life without migration and devotes his time to his Goatery business.

Sushila is forever thankful to NYDHEE for their intervention and support due to which she is now free from the exploitation and drudgery of migration. She has now a long term plan to continue his Goatery business and save enough money to buyback his land. NYDHEE continues its support and handhold such vulnerable and marginalized community who are forced to lose their assets due to attain basic survival.
