WASH

Water is life. Safe and readily available water is important for public health, whether it is used for drinking, domestic use, food production or recreational purposes. Improved water supply and sanitation, and better management of water resources, can boost countries' economic growth and can contribute greatly to poverty reduction. In this context, NYDHEE supported vulnerable communities of Jharkhand and West Bengal to access safe and pure drinking water.

The main objective of the programme is to make available pure drinking water and sanitation and reduce CO2 to lead a healthy life. It created awareness among the socio- economically backward and vulnerable people regarding their health and hygiene resulting upliftment of human resource and saving money which was previously spent on medical expenses. It has covered 39 villages of 6 blocks in 3 districts of Jharkhand and 21 villages of 8 blocks in 3 districts of West Bengal. The drinking water in these villages was highly contaminated with fluoride, iron, alkaline, magnesium etc. when we conducted water test. As per demand of the villagers we supported Bio Sand Filter to 1000 families in both the states. Now they are not boiling water for drinking purpose. It reduced their drudgery because they go far away to collect fuelwood. Also, it saves their money because some people purchased fuelwood to boil water. As they are not burning the fuelwood to boil water, it saves forest and environment. It ceased emission of carbon dioxide.
