Climate Resilient Agriculture

Agriculture is the basic source of livelihood among rural people. NYDHEE worked with small and marginal farmers to enhance their income through sustainable productivity and production. Due to global warming and climate change scenario, agriculture production is at risk. Farmers are using huge quantity of chemical fertilizer and pesticide to increase the production and productivity though it is severe harmful to our soil, water, air and environment. NYDHEE strives towards climate resilient and sustainable agriculture practices by small and marginal farmers. It frequently organized capacity building programme like training and exposure for the farmers. The training includes preparation of organic manures and pesticides and its use, package of practice, trellis method for creeper and climber crops, multilayer farming etc. Package of practices (PoP) of different crops developed and shared with farmers.

Integrated Animal Management

Livelihood through integrated animal management (IAM) is a flagship programme NYDHEE. The programme aims to enhance the income of 7350 vulnerable households in 159 villages. These villages are coming under 18 gram panchayats of Muribahal and Bangiriposhi blocks under Balangir and Mayurbhanj districts respectively. The programme includes improved goat rearing and backyard poultry farming. The cohesive improved goat rearing includes holistic package of practices and management practices such as shed management with improved goat shed, feeding practice including supplementary azola and mineral cake, regular vaccination and treatment, fodder and forage cultivation and marketing support. Rigorous training programme has been organized for goat rearing family on integrated animal management. From improved goat rearing, each family has been earning an average income of Rs. 20,000/- to Rs. 25,000/- per year. The income of the family increase from 30 to 50 per cent per year. We have supported female goats to 350 most vulnerable households to augment their income and ensure sustainable livestock. The impact of our programme visible even beyond our intervention village. The farmers of our neighbour project villages learned and practiced improved goat rearing.

Passing the Gift

A positive behavioural and attitudinal changes marked among the women SHG members after training on 12 cornerstone values and participatory self review and planning (PSRP) under OSED project. Inspired by the training, the SHG member having more goats donated one goat to another needy member of the self help group as a pass on gift. The member received the goat promising to take proper and adequate care of the goat which was gifted to her. She will increase the herd size and give offspring (progeny) as a gift to another needy and vulnerable family for livelihood. The pass on gift creates a social cohesion and solidarity among the SHG members of the community.
