Odisha Socio-Economic Development project (OSED) funded by Heifer International

The project aims to adopt a Farmer Producer Organization down model to accelerate income of women smallholder farmers through scaling up goat production through capacity development of women led FOAB’s. The project will engage with FOABs at different stages of maturity in identifying critical problems and challenges, tailoring solutions to address them, and help the knowledge, inputs and returns to percolate down to the member farmers.

This project focuses on strengthening the capacity of FOABs in areas of management, governance, and financial management.  To enhance existing capacity, the project will assess the capacity needs, design, and redefine the standard activities proposed for intervention and review to what extent the capacity of FOAB has enhanced during the project tenure.

This project focus on primarily on Black Bengal goat value chain, the farmers already trained and strengthened goat management and practices during the MSED project. More focus in this project to connect the farmers into the market system through FOAB, Goat production will be increased as there is high market demand. Focus also be done enhancing quality meat goats to the market. Through strengthening FOAB the farmers will benefits collective marketing and regular income. The target is that every family will sell 8 quality Black Bengal meat goats in the market per year, this project targets 5,000 families and total marketable meat goats are 40,000 per year.  There will be also other agricultural supplementary value chain products promoted such as Cashew, mango and crops.

Achievements under OSED project-

  • 345 SHGs received refresher training on 12 cornerstone
  • 98 SHGs trained in 18 indicators
  • 3278 vaccination done for livestock, 3427 deworming done
  • 288 goat sheds prepared
  • 403 members trained in azolla tank preparation, 146 trained in mineral cake preparation
  • 266 SHGs trained on SHG management
  • 119 SHGs trained in Integrated Animal Management
