Trickle Up with its mission to work with ultra-poor; and Tata Communications, as part of their CSR initiative, envisions to empower women living in extreme poverty through mobile technology, and has provided funds to Trickle Up to undertake “Mobile Connections to Promote Women's Economic Development” (M-POWERED) project. This project intended in its pilot phase to directly empower 1800 women living in extreme poverty in eastern India with custom-designed mobile technology that will result in improved livelihoods, increased access to financial services and greater participation in government programs. In the current phase, the successful pilot is proposed to be scaled up in other communities and saturate the existing direct reach to a district wide approach. NYDHEE is working for 650 ultra-poor families in Muribahal block of Balangir district, Odisha.
The project aims to make significant and replicable contributions to eradicate extreme poverty by providing extremely poor women with access to appropriate mobile technologies and improving major anti-poverty programs to be more responsive to the needs of ultra-poor households. Two primary objectives of this intervention are (a) Increase extremely poor households’ access to information by enabling them to use digital technology (smart phones and apps in local languages) and (b) Increase the responsiveness and accountability of government to the needs of extremely poor households by increasing their access to real-time data about these needs and strengthening households’ ability to provide input and feedback about services provided.
